- A festival is a special time of year when people celebrate something. Festivals are celebrated all over the world in different ways. Some festivals are held to honor the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to cause trouble. For example, in Japan, people have a festival called Obon to honor their ancestors. They light incense and make offerings to their ancestors. They also light lanterns and hang them outside their houses. In many parts of China, people celebrate the Hungry Ghost Festival. They prepare food and offer it to the dead.
